When do you need to take a probiotic?
You don’t necessarily need to take a probiotic all the time and taking the same product all the time is not going to be of great benefit long term as you will just be replenishing the exact same good bacteria (we have thousands of strains of good bacteria).
If you feel you need to be on a constant probiotic for general health, then switching around different products and across different strains is going to be greater benefit to your microbiome.
Prebiotics are more important daily and on an ongoing basis.
There are certain times when probiotics are important to take and here are the top 4 reasons:
1. If you are taking antibiotics
While you are taking the course of antibiotics, then taking Saccharomyces boulardii can be helpful to minimise some of the damage the antibiotics will do to the good bacteria. Then when you have finished the antibiotics course, moving onto a multi-strain probiotic will give greater benefit.
2. After you have had a bout of gastro
It’s good to rebalance the microbiome with a multi-strain probiotic.
3. If you take antimicrobial herbal products
These can eliminate bacteria in a similar way to antibiotics. Examples of these include: wormwood, pau d’arco, garlic extract, grapefruit seed extract, etc. Any herbal antimicrobial treatment should be followed by a course of probiotics.
4. Certain probiotic strains can help certain conditions
As an example, there are certain probiotics that can help with eczema (Lactobacillus rhamnosus).
